Easily accessible within two hours’ drive from Christchurch and an essential stop on any South Island trip, the Kaikōura region is famous for its abundant marine life and spectacular mountain and ocean vistas. The name Kaikōura literally refers to the delicacy of the region (kai: food + kōura: crayfish), so endorsements of the local seafood don’t come much better than that.
As well as catching and sampling the wonderful kai moana here, there are plenty of ways to appreciate the wildlife in this beautiful ocean playground. As Kaikōura locals, we’ve got a few recommendations for you to enjoy the town when you’re not out fishing.
One of Kaikōura’s most iconic sights is a whale tail breaking the surface of the water, which you can experience for yourself on a whale watching tour.
You can see Kaikōura’s famous seal colony by taking a walk along the Kaikōura Peninsula Walkway, or take it a step further with Seal Swim Kaikōura, where you can actually share the water with these graceful animals.
This is another must-do wildlife experience, taking you out for a scenic boat ride along the beautiful coast to see dusky dolphins playing in their natural habitat.

Kaikōura history
Learn more about our town’s rich history as an early Māori settlement and whaling port at the Kaikōura Museum or the heritage Fyffe House.
Beautiful local walks range from the 30-minute Puhi Puhi Reserve loop track to the eight-hour Mount Fyffe Hut walk or the two-day private Kaikōura Coast Walk.
We highly recommend getting the mountain bike out and hitting the local tracks. These explore the coast, mountains and rivers, with plenty of options for beginners and experts alike. The track starting at the Mount Fyffe DOC car park is a steep ride that presents a great challenge for experienced riders and stunning views from the top, while the Hapuka Trail is a beautiful family-friendly ride. E-bikes are available for hire to make your ride that little bit easier.
